Featured Artist Wendy Sheasby, August 7-30.

Wendy Sheasby, Summer Retreat, Mixed media, 30×24 in.

Featured Artist Wendy Sheasby is a native of the Adirondack Mountains, most revered for mountains, streams and cascading waterfalls.  Her interest in painting started there and began with mountain scenes and rocks.    A member of High Peaks Artists for 30 years she was motivated to do more.   She says, “Moving to Rhinebeck has opened up new beginnings for me.”  After moving she has begun studying with Jenny Nelson, abstract painter, at Woodstock School of Art.

Wendy’s paintings on view for this Featured Artist Exhibition will be a surprise.  Instead of the abstracts we have grown accustomed to seeing she has recently become enamored with gesturing abstraction and has started painting a long line of women from her family.  She has dealt with this period of covid-19 imposed isolation with a compulsion to remember and reaffirm values of community and family.  These new paintings depict women from her family.  Wendy says:  “Capturing their remembered expressions was difficult at first but got easier and each next painting in the series was emotional and therapeutic.”  The series, so far, includes:  preparation for a picnic at a local favorite picnicking place on Sundays, a baby shower, a party and there are many more memories to be mined.

While her palette is the same the style is “naïve”. “My  medium is oil and mixed media because it allows me the space in the characters’ faces to show the nostalgia I have been feeling recently during this pandemic.”

Reminiscent of many self-taught artists SUMMER RETREAT is of a long line of women in her family as they appeared in the early 1900s.These painting are a mix of nostalgia and childhood memories, a lifetime passion and that  shows in her work.

Artists she most admires are David Hockney, Hugh Kappel and August-Pierre Renoir.
