Featured Artist Mary Belliveau July 3-26, 2020
Featured Artist, Mary Belliveau’s interest in art began early with scribbles on her parents’ walls and continued through her studies in art education at Buffalo State University College and other art schools, depending on her residence at the time. After years of raising five children, working alongside an entrepreneurial husband, surviving chronic Lyme Disease, becoming a registered nurse and traveling to foreign countries, she is finally picking up her paint brushes again!
This exhibition highlights work that has grown out of her travels in Ireland. She has chosen to exhibit works featuring Irish personalities engaged in community activities, music—oh, the music. One can hear it in Belliveau’s realistic depictions of street musicians plucking stringed instruments, reverently raising their voices to the sky, eyes closed as they move to hear the passion of the song. What about the pride on the face of that farmer as he receives the prize for the largest onion at the fair? Then there are exquisite landscapes of castles and craggy ocean edges.
Mary creates in various media, heeding the call of each subject. She is attracted to subjects of beauty and visual happenings of interest, human personalities and sometimes troubling current and past events. Her goal is to tell a story, to encourage a viewer’s reflection and to celebrate the world around her with a classical rendering.
Belliveau says, “I believe there is a rhythm in all of life and capturing that in my paintings from many sources creates for me an opportunity to share with others a particular focus – a moment in time that enriches my life and hopefully the lives of others.”
