Maureen Squires

About

Maureen Squires is a working painter/calligrapher now living in the Hudson Valley. She approaches her lettering from a painter’s perspective and exhibits her work widely. In addition to Gallery 71 she is a member of the Touchstone Gallery in Washington, DC.  

While residing in Connecticut, she was on the faculty and is a former board member of the Guilford Art Center.  Maureen was an elected member of the Kehler Liddel Gallery in New Haven, prior to that she was a member of Gallery One. She was an Artist in Residence at the Josef and Annie Albers Foundation winter of 2001. Maureen has directed three international calligraphy conferences in Philadelphia, New York, and Guilford, CT.  Teaching experience has included conference workshops and college level through adult education. She graduated as a painting major, education  minor with a B. A. in Art from Seton Hill University; further study included two years of advanced calligraphy at Carnegie Mellon University with Arnold Bank along with many years of study with other fine calligraphers. 

Her work consists primarily of “painting letters and words”. Maureen enjoys interpreting the words of others or simply experimenting with the abstract forms of the alphabet in many historical and contemporary styles Her tools range from traditional steel nibs, pointed and flat brushes to reeds, bamboo and as she puts it, “anything that writes”.  She writes with ink, liquid acrylic, gouache, Japanese watercolors and acrylic paint. She doesn’t limit her work to the alphabet and enjoys forays into landscape painting and colorful abstracts.
