FEATURED ARTIST JULY 2024

Art Gallery 71 invites you to
Nostalgia
a show by artist Alix Travis
July 5th - August 6th
Reception: Saturday, July 20th, 4-6pm

Nostalgia plays a big part in my life.  Family, friends, memories, flowers:  these are among my favorite things and the subject of my current exhibition in oils.

I carry a sketchbook nearly everywhere I go and I have saved years of sketch books. These sketchbooks are a fount of memories and a source of subjects to paint. While sketching is a basic part of any artist’s practice, it can take many different forms. I prefer sketching people in movement.  These sketches often show up in my paintings, as the subject I originally sketched but also the movement I was interested in depicting.

“Breakfast Coffee Club” is of a wonderful group of friends, not my own friends, but friends of each other who meet every day the weather is nice at a picnic table beside the road.  Their enjoyment of each other is palpable and brings me pleasure as I drive past them.  The men in the painting are not the actual men I observe nearly every weekday, rather the figures engaging in this companionable behavior are drawn from my sketch books.

As a surprise, I am including my most recent project, in a medium that is new to me, a digital comic book, “My Life with Cats.”

I hope this collection of painting’s brings you pleasure, as the recollections that floated through my mind did me.
